We have prepared a complete guide to all the varieties of Marijuana seeds that we can find in the market.

These are the varieties we are going to talk about:

  • Indica (marijuana strains)
  • Sativa (marijuana varieties)
  • White (marijuana strains)
  • Haze (Marijuana varieties)
  • Blue (marijuana strains)

Indica (marijuana strains)

For a long time, Indica cannabis has been considered a subspecies of Sativa cannabis. But we can not state categorically that this is true, since some schools of thought defend the opposite, that the subspecies is Sativa cannabis and the species the Indica.

The reality is that it is not known with certainty which of the two varieties arose first, defining the species and the subspecies. We can deduce, by the name, that it was the Sativa that defined the species, however, this circumstance may be due solely to the fact that Sativas were found and classified first.

Origin: Variety of Indica marijuana

Originally, Indica cannabis comes from Central Asia, the Tibetan Plateau and the Indian subcontinent, particularly from the Himalayan and Hindu Kush areas. The arid and inhospitable environment of these places made Cannabis Indica adapt naturally to the environment, thus developing the characteristics that define it: leafy and short stature, broad finger-shaped leaves, dense buds, all of them are ways of conserve water. On the other hand, Indicas are prone to bloom relatively fast, this is a natural way to protect against the sudden appearance of very harsh winters.

Qualities: Variety of Indica marijuana

The natural qualities of Indica cannabis make it an ideal variety to exploit in the growing room.

  • They are good for novice growers and unstable environments due to their strong and resistant nature.
  • Its squat shape allows to have them in small spaces.
  • The time of flowering of the Indicas is relatively short, about eight weeks normally, this makes them perfect for growers who are in a hurry to harvest.
  • On the other hand, the Indicas also have the habit of forming a central “kola” that, together with what we have just mentioned, makes them easy to handle and suitable for SOG crops.

As in all species, not all Indicas follow exactly the same norm and there may be variations, but in general, the authentic Indicas conform to the norm to the letter. It is possible that the most authentic Indicas, or at least the most typical, are the Kush varieties, whose roots come from Afghanistan and northern Pakistan, specifically from the Hindu Kush areas.

Aromas of musk, hashish, earthy and spicy are those that are most associated with the Indica species for smoking. Indica cannabis buds have more CBD in relation to THC than cannabis sativa, so when smoking, the sensation is much more narcotic, heavy and sleepy. It’s true the old proverb that says “Sativa elevates you and Indica tells you to go numb”.

Through modern techniques of hybridization and genetic improvement breeders have it easy to exploit plants in order to obtain the desired characteristics. Landrace Indicas – or pure varieties – are often used in genetic improvement programs, along with other dominant Indica strains, to create hybrids to pass their short stature and rapid flowering qualities.

White Rhino- Green House, Kaia Kush-Green House, OG Kush-Dinafem and Skunk Kush-Seni Seeds are the pure Indica varieties (or strongly dominant) most popular.

Cannabis Sativa (marijuana strains)

Cannabis Sativa originates in tropical and equatorial areas of the world, particularly in Africa, Southeast Asia and South and Central America. The characteristics that define Sativa cannabis are the following:

  • “Christmas tree” style growth pattern
  • Tall stature (normally exceeding three meters), with long internodal lengths.
  • Thin leaves reminiscent of long, light green fingers.
  • Multiple areas of production of little tight and thin buds.

These features have been developed by the Sativas to adapt to the environment. In humid regions with lots of sunlight, plants compete with each other in a fierce way, so each plant tends to grow tall and strong to avoid being overshadowed.

Sativa varieties take longer to flower than Indica varieties, sometimes exceeding thirteen weeks. This feature arises from an adaptation to the long and tropical seasons of growth. Due to their characteristics, Sativas may need a lot of attention in the growing room. The size they reach is sometimes a problem, they can also be thirsty for nutrients, which transforms into incredibly fast growth.

Sativa varieties grow perfectly outdoors, in warm climates, with plenty of space they can stretch their leaves and branches to the maximum. Sudden changes in the environment, especially changes in temperature, affect them a lot, however, Sativa cannabis can produce spectacular crops if the ideal conditions are met.

Possibly, cultivating cannabis Sativa is not as easy or quick as cultivating Indica varieties, but Sativa has a great advantage over Indica: the effects. The typical effects of Sativa are not sleepy at all, but rather, euphoric and edifying. Many smokers are consumers of Sativa exclusively and can go very far to reach that unique state.

The aromas characteristic of Sativa species that are smoked are clean and fruity with nuances of pine or fresh lemon. Normally the smoke itself is less strong than that of the Indica species and is also softer for the lungs and throat.

The most exploited of Sativa varieties in breeding programs are their flavors and their psychoactive qualities. Normally they hybridize with Indicas to make their size more manageable for the modern growing room.

Jack Herer Green House, Santa Sativa and Mexican Sativa are some of the pure Sativa varieties available today.

White (marijuana strains):

The term “White” for cannabis strains is generic, it was coined to refer to certain strains of cannabis that, in light, seem to glow. The buds of the White cannabis strains – and often also the leaves – possess this particular and notorious quality, are covered by cobwebs of thick trichomes that produce an enormous amount of bright THC resin crystals.

White cannabis strains are very potent because they contain high levels of THC and other cannabinoids, which is why their seeds are the best sold all over the world. The effects of White cannabis can be very different – from intense and heavy to cheerful and cheerful – but they all have in common that they are always powerful. White Widow is probably the best known of the White cannabis strains.

This is one of the most popular strains available and is used comprehensively for the genetic improvement of many hybrids, since it passes to offspring that characteristic white shine, as is the case of Misty Weed, White Rhino and White Russian.

Anyway, to be called White cannabis is not necessary to have a direct relationship with the White Widow, in fact, other varieties such as Crystal and the winner of the High Times Cup, White Smurf, could be classified as Wite cannabis.

The most popular varieties are: White Widow-Green House, Great White Shark-Green House, White Widow-Dinafem and White Lemon-Strain Hunters.

Cannabis Haze (Marijuana varieties)

Haze cannabis strains are native to Central America. The pure strains (Landrace) of this area are known for their bittersweet aroma and the animating and cheerful effect they provide to the consumer.

Authentic Haze are purely Sativa and can become excessively high. If you want to successfully grow a Haze indoors and you want it to grow completely, you need a large growing room. The buds are quite light and the harvest may be scarce for such a large plant, however, this is offset by its exceptional power.

Haze cannabis provides unique effects that have become an object of worship. Haze lovers can go very far to reproduce the magnificent features of this species. Even the High Life Cup has a special “Haze” cup that is awarded each year to the best cultivated Haze variety.

Haze: A much appreciated variety

Generally, the variety that meets all the Haze qualities is considered the winner of the High Life Cup. The Neville’s Haze, for example, bred to contain the best of the Haze species, has undergone a long process of selection and hybridization in which the best properties of a set of Haze phenotypes are selected.

The Original Haze is also a very well-considered variety. Although it may not seem so by its name, it has been crossed with Sativas from Asia. The Original Haze embodies this high and cheerful effect typical of the Haze species and won the 2008 High Life Cup.

Of the Haze currently available, Greenhouse supplies some of the best varieties and the amount of trophies that accumulate confirm it.

You can not talk about the Haze variety without mentioning Arjan’s Haze 2, Super Silver Haze and Super Lemon Haze. These three “bombs” are downright popular and very good examples of what can be achieved with the great old-school genetics and modern breeding techniques. It combines the wonderful effects of the Haze species with a greater and more powerful production.

Cannabis Blue (marijuana strains)

Any variety of cannabis that contains blueberries in its genetic inheritance belongs to the species “Blue Cannabis”. At the end of the seventies, Dutch Passion developed the original Blueberry, which has won many High Times cups.

Blueberry cannabis is one of the main Indica varieties, its leaves are dark and tend to acquire violet and blue tones. Although its production is slightly lower than the average in other varieties, it contains high levels of THC (almost 20%), producing a powerful and euphoric effect that seems more typical of Sativa and not so much of an Indica, despite of the size of the plant.

Probably, the most outstanding quality of the Blueberry variety is its characteristic fruity and strong aroma at the same time, and its flavor, reminiscent of cranberry.

Aroma, potency and coloration are the three qualities that breeders look for when they cross and hybridize the Blueberry variety to create Blue marijuana.

Varieties Blue:

Many Blue varieties such as Blue Mystic, Kushberry and Blue Cheese pull more towards the Indicas side, providing the intense effects of this species. While varieties such as SoGouda, Crimea Blue and Blue Haze are more similar to Sativas, providing much more uplifting effects, more in line with the original variety.

Blue Thai-Dinafem and Blue Cheese-Dinafem are the two most popular varieties.
